Gluten Free Pintxos in San Sebastian: Four Bars and a Plan

Can celiacs eat pintxos? Yes, but a pintxo is a slice of bread with a topping on a toothpick, and the bar behind it shares knives, boards and fryers between everything. Gluten free pintxos in San Sebastian therefore depend on choosing the right counter more than the right dish. The Basque celiac association, EZE, endorses selected venues alongside the national FACE Restauración seal, and how that wider system works is covered in the Madrid piece on Spain’s celiac certification, so this page stays with the Basque specifics.

Three sentences that do the work

A seal does not replace the conversation at the bar. Gandarias, one of the best-known addresses in the Old Town, marks its options for celiacs, but because it is a classic pintxo bar it is worth asking about the day’s routine. Three lines cover it:

  • “¿Tienen pan sin gluten para los pintxos?” (Do you have gluten-free bread for the pintxos?)
  • “¿Se preparan en una superficie aparte?” (Are they prepared on a separate surface?)
  • “Glutenik gabe,” Basque for “without gluten,” added when ordering.

A crawl in four stops

The Old Town is small enough to walk in one evening, and four bars carry most of the weight. Mesón Portaletas, at Portu Kalea 21, holds both the EZE and FACE seals, an unusual combination in a district of very traditional bars. Pintxos are served without bread there, and the menu also lists paella.

Gandarias, at 31 de Agosto Kalea 23, runs a separate menu for celiacs, including a pintxo built around tortilla española, and hands over gluten-free bread so the classic format survives. Mendaur Berria, at Fermín Calbetón Kalea 8, turns out creative pintxos that are mostly free of gluten and keeps its own bread for celiacs. Atari Gastroteka, at Calle Mayor 18, faces the Santa María church and marks gluten-free pintxos and larger plates (raciones) with a small flag, so no guesswork is needed at the counter.

Sitting down instead

La Raviolina, at Portu Kalea 9, is an Italian restaurant with a wide menu for celiacs and the FACE seal. Juantxo Taberna, at Enbeltran Kalea 6, serves sandwiches, pintxos and larger plates, and La Rebotika, at Zarautz Kalea 6, is a grill restaurant advised by EZE, with bread for celiacs and food for celiacs prepared separately.

Sweet stops across the river

Gros sits on the other side of the Urumea river, and Dulces Free, at Doctor Claudio Delgado 1, is a pastry shop where everything is free of gluten and refined sugar, with donuts, cookies and brownie cheesecake. Back in the Old Town, Pura Donosti, at Iñigo Kalea 12, runs an organic kitchen with its own workshop. Its focaccias, sandwiches on house bread, empanadas, salads, yogurt with granola and açaí bowls are all made without gluten, and part of the menu is vegan and lactose-free.

Plant-based, wheat-free

Tedone, at Corta 10 in Gros, builds its menu on organic, whole-grain ingredients, with a quiet terrace and nearly the entire card free of gluten, alongside a long list of vegan and vegetarian dishes. Mapa Verde, at Trueba Kalea 4, is fully vegan, with a vegan pintxo bar next to the Tabakalera cultural center, and its gluten-free options are prepared with care. Kafe Botanika, at Gernikako Arbola Pasealekua 8, serves brunch in a garden, and Polka, at Sarriegi Plaza 7, marks its dishes for celiacs clearly, from pintxos to a burger and beer.

A day here can run from breakfast in Gros to the Old Town at night, and gluten free pintxos in San Sebastian are easiest on a route that ends at a bar already named above. For a city where whole kitchens do the work that bar counters do here, Barcelona’s vegan and gluten-free restaurants offer a useful contrast.

Addresses, opening hours and menus change often, so check the venue’s website or social profile before going. People with celiac disease should confirm preparation details at pintxo bars, especially shared counters and fryers.
