Gluten Free Vegan Restaurants in Barcelona: Pötstot, Veganashi, Hanai

Barcelona’s city census lists 245 places with some gluten-free option and only 24 where the whole menu is free of gluten. Add a plant-based requirement and the list shrinks to a handful of kitchens. Gluten free vegan restaurants in Barcelona are few, and the ones below were confirmed by more than one source. How Spain’s certification system works is explained in the Madrid piece on Spain’s celiac certification, so this page stays with the city and its plates.

A restaurant built for one table

Pötstot, at Carrer de València 204 in the Eixample, makes everything vegan, free of gluten and free of lactose. Read without the diaeresis, the name sounds like the Catalan for “you can eat it all,” and the idea is to seat a celiac, a vegan and a diner with no restrictions at the same table. The founders are Daniel Forés and Quim Viñas.

The menu shows how the double restriction is solved in practice. The cannelloni are made with rice sheets and filled in a béchamel of soy milk and truffle, and the vegan paella is built on seasonal vegetables such as zucchini, eggplant, peppers, asparagus, mushrooms and artichokes. Croquetas are on the list, along with a cashew cheesecake and a fried almond-milk dessert, and the drinks run to kombucha, beers without gluten and vegan wines and cavas. In April 2025 a second Pötstot opened in the Raval at Carrer del Pintor Fortuny 32, in the premises of L’Hortet, a vegetarian restaurant that served set menus there for thirty-five years.

Sushi without sugar in Poble Sec

Veganashi, at Carrer de Lleida 33 in Poble Sec, serves sushi that is plant-based, wheat-free and made without added sugar, using organic brown rice. Takeaway and delivery come in compostable packaging. Soy sauce is the usual hiding place for wheat in sushi, so a kitchen built around both exclusions removes most of the questions.

The pastry shop in the Born

Hanai Vegana is a small bakery on Carrer dels Carders, in the Born district, where everything is vegan and wheat-free. The case holds sweet pastries and savory ones, among them empanadas and alfajores, and there are options sweetened with dates or coconut sugar instead of refined sugar. Special requests for soy-free, sugar-free or raw items can be arranged as well. The bar seating makes it easy to sit down with a coffee and a plate of sweets.

Pizza night

Messié has run since 2015 and operates two pizzerias with entirely wheat-free kitchens: Carrer de Siracusa 15 in Gràcia and Carrer de Muntaner 109 in the Eixample. A third restaurant in the group is not entirely gluten-free, so the right address matters when booking, and reservations are taken by phone. The pizzas have a thin, crisp base, and the menu also has fresh pasta, lasagna, salads and its own craft beer, including a light Session IPA. Vegan and lactose-free options are available.

Where the dedicated kitchens cluster

The census places its 24 fully gluten-free kitchens in only 10 of the city’s 73 districts, and twelve of them sit in three: the left and right Eixample and Les Corts. For gluten free vegan restaurants in Barcelona, the Eixample is the natural starting point, with Pötstot and Messié in the same district, while Poble Sec and the Born cover the sushi and the pastries.

Pantry and phrases

For bread and snacks to take along, two shops stock products without gluten: M2 Gluten Free at Avinguda Diagonal 505 and Celiadictos at Carrer de la Pobla de Lillet 5. In restaurants where the plate is not obvious, the Spanish “vegano y sin gluten” (vegan and gluten-free) works, as does the Catalan “vegà i sense gluten,” and “sin lácteos” (no dairy) covers the third common request.

Addresses, opening hours and menus change often, so check the venue’s website or social profile before going. People with celiac disease should confirm that the whole kitchen is gluten-free, especially at restaurants with several locations such as Messié.
