Gluten-free Porto starts with bakeries rather than dinner menus, and that works out well for vegan travelers — the two diets overlap most often in exactly those spots.
Porto is the second stop in this gluten-free Portugal series – see how it stacks up against Lisbon and the Algarve in the gluten-free Portugal guide, which also covers the nationwide APC rules.
Certified Gluten-Free Spots in Porto
Gluten-free Porto has two addresses with full APC certification within a short walk of the city center. Com Cuore, a tea room near São Bento train station, is 100% gluten-free and certified through the APC/Biotrab Gluten Free Project.
Cash only — there’s no card machine, so plan accordingly. The place gets crowded around lunch, and the single bathroom isn’t always in working order, so an off-peak visit is the safer bet for a longer stop.
The second certified address is GlutenFreak, a restaurant on Rua da Torrinha where the entire menu — not just select dishes — is gluten-free and APC-accredited.
Vegan Bakeries Gluten-Free Visitors Love Too
Odete Bakery in the Bonfim district (Rua de Santo Ildefonso 478, with a second spot in Cedofeita) is a fully vegan bakery known for gluten-free croissants that reportedly sell out before noon. It isn’t certified gluten-free, though, and an open bakery with wheat flour in the air and on every counter carries a real cross-contamination risk. For anyone with celiac disease, this bakery is off the table regardless of which items are technically gluten-free.
- Odete Bakery – vegan bakery, gluten-free croissants, no APC certification and a real cross-contamination risk, turns into Odete Pizzaria on Saturdays with vegan sourdough pizza
- My Green Pastry – bakery on Praça da República, French-style pastries, some gluten-free and sugar-free options, also uncertified
Anyone with celiac disease should stick to the certified addresses above. People with a mild gluten sensitivity, without a celiac diagnosis, might reasonably choose specific items at these bakeries after checking with staff about that one item.
Gluten-Free Francesinha (Not a Vegan Pick)
Tasquinha do Bé, right on the edge of Ribeira, is the one place in Porto serving francesinha — the city’s signature sandwich of beef, cured sausage, and ham — in a gluten-free and lactose-free version. It runs around €14 against €10 for the regular one, and the kitchen isn’t fully dedicated, so calling ahead is standard practice. Francesinha is meat by definition, so even the gluten-free version doesn’t fit a vegan diet. It’s still worth knowing about, since every Porto food guide mentions it and other travelers will bring it up.
Grocery Shopping and Trip Logistics
Gluten-free Porto takes a bit of scheduling around, since several key addresses keep unusual hours. Continente and Pingo Doce both run stores here too, marked with the same crossed-out wheat stalk symbol as in Lisbon, so self-catering works the same way in both cities. Odete Bakery is closed Sundays and Mondays, and Com Cuore’s cash-only policy is worth remembering if the closest ATM is out on a Sunday.
APC certification and the list of addresses that carry it work the same way across Portugal — the full breakdown of the system, plus a much denser certified network, is covered in the gluten-free Lisbon guide, useful for anyone routing a trip through both cities.
